Friendly service - very helpful

Beds are too hot. Duvets really don't offer much choice - you are either too hot or, if you take the duvet off, too cold. Blankets may be old fashioned but they allow much more flexibility. Also this is a very old building so the floorboards creak very loudly. There's not much that can be done about this but, unfortunately, the people in the room overhead got up before 6am and seemed to spend an hour just plodding around - very noisy. However, I would definitely stay here again. I visit York regularly and the price I paid for a room of the quality we had was excellent value for money (I've paid more and had less comfort elsewhere in the city).

The staff were very helpful and courteous, and we enjoyed our visit to York. The position of the hotel in relation to the city was very good.

Our experience at the Best Western Monkbar hotel in York was mixed. We were disappointed to find we had been given a room with no double glazing against the noise of the busy road outside, and this room had a whole corner taken up by the lift shaft, making a great deal of noise every time it was used. Not a good start to our visit. However, on complaining at reception we were offered a change of room, and provided with a quieter room with double glazing, although this was outside on a balcony. My husband found the bed rather small being well over 6 feet in height. This caused another problem when we were leaving, as it was raining, and the tiled steps outdoors to leave by were very wet, causing my husband to slip and fall down several steps and hurt his arm. Only after we reported this did they request a sign to be put out to warn people of the danger. These are things which should be considered if the hotel wants to really improve their service and provision to customers.

A nice location and a helpfull staff

We had room 50. it was noisy at times we were over a kitchen or a laundry. we were woken early with a droning noise

We found the Monkbar very central to everything and very easy for our departure out of York. We really enjoyed our stay.

Proximity to the features of the city and the room since refurbishment.

The restaurant head waiter (Terry) seemed unable to organise seating for us and asked several times for room number and name before we were seated even though there were few people there at the time. We had booked via reception but this was not recorded and he just seemed to panic.

The jacuzzi bath

Yes, the main lights in the room did not work. I couldn't therfore do my hair and make-up properly as I could bearly see! Also the bathroom was up a spiral staircase, just not practical during the night! I also banged my thigh on the metal case to which I have a huge black bruise! Not a practical room.

HOTEL HAS A PLEASANT INNER COURTYARD,ITS A NICE PLACE TO SIT OUT HAVE A DRINK AND A SMOKE.MY 2ND STAY THERE,I HAD READ SOME POOR REVIEWS BUT HOTEL SEEMED GOOD ENOUGH TO ME.THEY HAVE A COUPLE SEPARATE DISABLED ROOMS WITH VERY GOOD FACILITIES.THERE IS A LITTLE BIT OF TRAFFIC NOISE FROM AROUND 7AM BUT I DID NOT FIND IT A PROBLEM.BREAKFAST WAS GOOD,DID NOT HAVE EVENING MEAL
