The hotel was chosen for my aunts 90th birthday family reunion. She lives in the US and wanted to mark this great occasion in England. The hotel lives up to its description for its quaintness and atmosphere, both of which were excellent. The dinner was excellent and the bar afterwards warm and friendly.
Disappointed that for the price of £106 per room we did not have access to free internet. Most of us had travelled from abroad and needed to check in flights etc, and we did not want to use credit card payment for the internet. The rooms were rather cramped and the bathroom walls needed a good scrub - I mentioned this to the reception.

Main reason for choosing Macdonald Bear Hotel: Reputation

Comfortable, friendly staff and pleasant location - on the doorstep for Blenheim Palace and an excellent bus service in to Oxford so we did not have to use our car. We were able to entertain our Oxford friends to dinner in style and do compliment the chef on every aspect.
Felt the bar lacked atmosphere, probably due to no dedicated bartender and after dinner we had to go looking for attention - maybe due to cutbacks or short-staffed?

Lovely traditional room in the main hotel with upto date features (such as flat screen TV. Very clean and pleasant room if a little hot.
The drinks were very expensive/rip off!. I was warned in advance by a friend but four drinks (a couple of G&T's (singles), a glass of wine and a bottle of cider) was £26 in a small undistinguished lounge is not good!.

We have stayed in the past in the main building and feel thet the standard of comfort and cleanliness was superior to the room we were in this time (room 16)it was rather dark even on a bright sunny day and the bathroom was shabby, dusty on surfaces and badly in need of a paint job. Overall we still enjoyed our stay.Very pleasant, professional staff.

The staff were attentive and friendly without being intrusive,especialy the waiting staff at dinner.

I think the room in relation to the fee was reasonable at the discounted rate we got via an online booking, but at the full rate it would have been too expensive. The staff at the reception desk and elsewhere were very professional and nice to us, although in the bar they were less friendly (but nevertheless were efficient).

The room and location were good. I thought the room was equivalent to a four-star b&b for comparison's sake.
The sound from other guests' rooms easily penetrated our room, which was unfortunate. Upon our arrival, we had lunch in the bar, where we found the service was efficient but not very friendly. More importantly, the price of the lunch was so out-of-proportion to its value of the meals that we decided that we would eat breakfast or dinner at the Bear Hotel, but if the quality and price had been aligned better, we would have done so.
