Quite a feat considering 2008’s 18.5 million passengers was an increase of 3.7% over 2007’s 17.8 million passengers, which was an increase of 7% over 2006. In addition to servicing such major airlines as Continental and Delta, Zaventem Airport also hosts many smaller budget carriers, 77 to be exact, from Adria Airways which flies to Ljubljana, Slovenia to Wind Jet, which flies to Forlì, Italy. The locals tell an amusing story about why the airport seems to experience so much foggy weather. When the Germans occupying Belgium in 1940 asked the people of Brussels where the best place would be to build a military airport, they pointed to a field known for its fog.
