Vienna offers couples the wheel deal

Get hitched from a height this summer - 200 feet to be precise.

Vienna's giant Ferris wheel has made it onto a recent list of the top 50 places to tie the knot by British newspaper The Independent.

The fairground attraction, known to locals as the Riesenrad, offers marriage ceremonies daily except Sunday in special art nouveau wedding gondolas.

Usually the ceremony is over before couples reach the highest point of the ride, allowing newlyweds to soak up their first moments of married life with spectacular views of one of the world's most romantic capitals.

Austria's wheel was built in 1897 by the British man responsible for similar constructions in Chicago, Paris, Blackpool and London. Vienna's famously featured in classic movie The Third Man with Orson Welles.

Other European destinations on the Independent's marriage location list include the London Eye wheel, Balmoral in Edinburgh, Torre Palazzone in Tuscany and La Preghiera, Umbria.
