Valkenburg: Fun, culture and relaxation
There is much to enjoy in Valkenburg. From the casino and paintballing activities, to the history and culture of the region, those staying at hotels in the Netherlands have plenty of choice here. Holidaymakers that simply want to relax will be able to do so in Valkenburg as well, as it has a wonderful wellness centre.
Gaming fun
Situated at the top of Cauberg Hill, Holland Casino Valkenburg is a top place for visitors to enjoy a spot of gaming fun. Entrants need to be 18 years old or above, but once inside they will have a feast of games awaiting them, with roulette, blackjack and more on offer.
Castle mania
Those staying at hotels in Valkenburg can make their way over to Velvet Cave, which leads towards some castle ruins where a fortress once stood. Guides will take visitors through the passageways here, where they can learn about the various legends of the site. There are also a number of wall paintings and sculptures in the cave.
As for the castle, travellers can look at what is left of the great hall as well as an artillery room and the chapel. Terrific views of the hill country below this elevated fortress can also be enjoyed, while a number of activities are run at the site as well, including a birds of prey show.
A tower and a toboggan
At Wilhelmina Tower in Valkenburg there is plenty of fun to be had. First of all, a cable lift takes visitors up to the lookout tower, where they can then take one of two toboggan runs back down, travelling at high speeds.
The tower itself is home to a cafe, a restaurant and a terrace. A splendid view over Valkenburg and the Geul Valley can be looked over at this site.
Caveball, which involves paintball action in the caves around this site, is also on offer. Two teams attempt to eliminate each other by hitting opponents with the coloured paintballs.
Lasertag, meanwhile, involves participants trying to shoot the enemy with laser guns. The combination of smoke and music make it a little trickier to hit opponents. Those that shoot the hidden mine found somewhere in the field will be given special abilities such as rapid fire.
Relaxing in Valkenburg
Located on the top of Cauberg, visitors to this area will find Sauna & Wellness resort Thermae 2000, a wellness centre with a variety of treatments on offer. The thermal waters here, which have a temperature of around 32 degrees C, are found in both indoor and outdoor pools. According to the organisation, they are particularly good for both muscles and joints.
A number of activities can be enjoyed in the thermal baths, including Thermae Motion, which involves short relaxation exercises as well as light and underwater sound therapy. Thermae Vitality, meanwhile, is somewhat more active as it is a gym session in the water.
Saunas and steam baths can help improve blood circulation, Thermae 2OOO believes, while resistance is improved as well. There are different kinds of saunas on offer here, including the stuga sauna, an outdoor Finnish offering with temperatures reaching 95 degrees C.
