Spaniards go quackers for duck festivalTopics: Events 
Until very recently, Mallorca's annual Releasing of the Ducks festival was marred in controversy, but recent efforts to appease animal rights activists by using fake instead of live birds make this seaside spectacle one not to be missed.The bizarre event is of unknown origin but was traditionally a race to capture as many ducks from the ocean as possible after organisers released them to the waves in Can Picafort. Nowadays, the principle remains the same, except the webbed creatures are made from yellow rubber. In total, 350 ducks are up for grabs at midday on August 15th. Boats drop anchor in front of the Hotel Sol y Mar, from where enthusiastic locals and tourists rush into the surf to claim their bobbing trophies in front of thousands of spectators. Can Picafort lies in the centre of the Bay of Alcudia on the picturesque north coast of Mallorca, making it a popular holiday destination.  |
