Dating back over 100 years, Kieler Woche has taken place in the north-German port of Kiel since 1882.

A host of entertainment and activities occur alongside the main events, the sailing competitions.

The city welcomes over three million nations for the ten-day festival, which features live music, cultural events and political forums.

Following an opening ceremony, a classical open-air concert, dance performances and temporary exhibitions entertain the masses, while they feast on the beer and gourmet food available at the countless stalls spread throughout the city.

There are also a number of street entertainers to be seen, such as comediens, clowns, magicians and acrobats.

Schilksee, the city's Olympic sailing lake, hosts a number of regattas, which include international class races and Olympic disciplines. It will also display the Windjammer parade of tall ships.

The event culminates in a fantastic firework display.

Kiel, in the north of Germany, is home to a number of attractions such as the church of St Nicholas, the ruins of a 16th-century castle and the town hall, which is known for its revolving wooden elevator.
