Portugal's National Day

Posted on Wed. 09/04/2008 18:30. Categories: Portugal | Events

Portugal celebrates its National Day on June 10th every day, marking the anniversary of the death of Portuguese poet and writer Luis de Camoes in 1580, who was regarded as a symbol of the region's greatness during the 16th century.

The whole country gets involved in celebrations, with parades in all the major cities during the event which is also referred to as 'Camoes day'.

Lusiads is the writer's most famous piece of work, a poem that celebrates Portuguese history and achievements during the golden age of discovery.

While residents of the country revel in the excitement of the day, Portuguese descendents around the world also often mark the occasion in their own way.

Embracing the country's modern-day multi-cultural identity, each city has its own style of celebration, so if visitors want to find out what's happening in a city near where they are staying, they should contact the local tourist office.

Luis de Camoes was famous for never being too far away from danger and he apparently lost an eye when fighting against the Moors in Morocco.
