Get your skates on Frankfurt

Skaters take over Frankfurt each week in Europe's biggest and fastest online skating events.

Beginners are warned away from the Tuesday Night Skating (TNS) because of the pace picked up by the group.

Participants are asked to wear protective clothes and helmets to take part in the skate-fest which can reach up to 5,000 people.

Skaters who won't fall over are invited to meet at Zwishchendurch bar near the start for some Apfelwein.

Not having drunk too much, people on wheels push off at the Deutschherrenufer in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen at 20:30, local time.

The route is between 35 and 45 km and takes about two-and-a-half hours to skate round, under the watchful eyes of paramedics and police.

TNS managed to get permission from the police despite a rocky relationship at the start of the event in 1996.

In the middle of the track there's a pit stop for riders to take a swig of some non-alcoholic Apfelsaftschorle.

Entry every Tuesday from April is free, but hurry by booking one of the cheap hotels in Frankfurt quick, the skating season ends on October 21st.

The event has proved so popular it has cottoned on in Munich under the heading Munchner Blade Night, which takes place on Monday evenings.
