Festa del Redentore, a hugely popular celebration occurs each year, in the romantic city of Venice.
The archipelago plays host to the festival dating back almost 500 years, originally held in 1576 to give thanks for the end of the plague.
Once a great feast, the eve of the celebration is now marked with a spectacular firework display.
The day was once remembered with the tradition made for a city dominated by its canals, a 'boat-bridge' made of a number of gondalas strung together to make a procession.
Now locals take to 2,000 boats of all kinds in festive decor and eat on the floating vessels while watching the fireworks, which last for up to an hour, illuminating the entire city.
Revellers then take to the beach on the Lido, waiting for the sun to rise.
On the day itself a number of events take place including rowing competitions, regattas and special church services.
The 11 mile long Venice Lido hosts the city's film festival each year and is home to approximately 20,000 residents.
