Donkey days in Braize

Posted on Thu. 10/07/2008 22:00. Categories: France | Events

Humble beasts of burden are given a break for a day in Braize as part of the tiny French village's annual donkey fair.

Every August the Bourbonnais breed is toasted by local fan Jo-Yves Charby, who organises the long-eared event himself.

The highlight of the day is a series of fiercely contested donkey races on Mr Charby's own flock of friendly asses.

Additionally, an arts and craft market specialising in lace products is set up in the heart of the village, as well as a range of musical entertainment, fine food and plenty to drink.

Braize is part of the Allier department in the region of Auvergne. It is spread over just 2,095 hectares at an altitude of 240m.

A similar donkey event takes place in the seaside resort of Trouville-sur-Mer in August, with the local beach providing the venue for fast races and furious betting.
