Cork calls on spirits

Posted on Mon. 01/09/2008 22:00. Categories: Ireland | Cork

For some spooky goings on, book into a cheap hotel in Cork at Halloween to celebrate the Irish Ghost Family Festival.

Cork turns into a spooktacular of eerie entertainment which involves supernatural readings and scary stage shows at venues around the city.

The festival was created for people who are frightened they won't be believed, according to the Irish Ghost Family Festival website.

Spiritualists, mediums and like-minded people can all get together at the Cork City Gaol Heritage Centre in the city to swap stories.

Panels of guests speak on all sorts of spiritual topics as part of the World Ghost Convention.

Previous speakers have included members of the White Witches of the Isles and a professor of folklore and ethnology for the University College of Cork.

Some hotels and restaurants are holding special spooky bookings around this time, which include scary tale telling.

The event is usually opened by the mayor and mayoress of Cork and will celebrate its eight birthday this year.

Cork is one of Ireland's major sea ports and boasts St Finn Barre's Cathedral, named after the patron saint of the city.

It became known as 'Rebel Cork' for its refusal to submit to invaders and quests for independence.

Ryanair passengers miss out on Cork's attract

Posted on Thu. 28/08/2008 22:00. Categories: Ireland | Cork

Passengers from East Midlands and Glasgow airports will no longer be able to travel to Cork after Ryanair announced closures.

The airline said it is cutting its routes to Cork from seven to five after charges for travelling to the city were increased by 20 per cent.

Daily routes from the two destinations will be stopped, with the last East Midlands flight occurring on October 26th and Glasgow's final one being on October 28th.

Michael O'Leary, chief executive of Ryanair, said the cancellations are regrettable but due to the cost increases.

"The loss of these flights, 200,000 passengers, 20 million euros [£16 million] in tourism revenue and 200 jobs could have been avoided if Cork Airport had agreed to continue the current low-cost agreement on these routes."

He added that as these reductions had not been made, the airline "cannot and will not" absorb the increases as it reduces its ability to offer "really low fares".

Mr O'Leary also cited the rising oil price as a reason why the route would not be able to adapt to these extra costs.

The Irish city is home to a number of events for those staying in cheap hotels in Cork, including the choral festival, which is held annually, and a jazz music gathering.
