Jazz in Warsaw

Posted on Thu. 17/07/2008 22:00. Categories: Poland | clubs

Music fans touring Poland should not miss Tygmont in the capital for a taste of what jazz clubs used to be like.

After descending into a smoky, subterranean cavern, enjoy the host of great live performances while tucking into a mouthwatering food and drinks menu too.

Located in Warsaw's city centre, the venue is aimed a serious music aficionados rather than tourists simply looking for a good place to drink and chat, as noise levels are restricted during some performances.

While a cover charge applies on certain nights access to the club is usually free, making it hugely popular.

Another perennially trendy establishment in the Polish capital is Miedzy Nami on Ulica Bracka, whose clientele includes plenty of models and media types all dressed to impress.

The bar also doubles up as a cool gallery for local artists and photographers who display their work on lounge walls.

Winehouse launches Camden club night

Posted on Tue. 15/07/2008 22:00. Categories: United Kingdom | clubs

Fans of troubled singing sensation Amy Winehouse can get closer to her star act thanks to a new club night she has launched in London.

The Back to Black performer kicked off proceedings at The Monarch in Camden on July 10th, and promised to play tracks that inspired her own career.

In reality, DJing was mainly left to her friend Bioux, while Winehouse danced along to a mix of Motown and classics from the past 40 years at the inaugural Snakehips at the Monarch event.

It is not the first time the trendy bar has attracted big name music stars; past performers have included Coldplay, Blur, Oasis, the Strokes and Death in Vegas.

The Monarch is situated on Chalk Farm Road and is open daily from 7pm until late for a variety of cutting edge music nights.

Fans hoping to catch Winehouse performing her own hits should head to the V Festivals in Chelmsford and Stafford in August.

Pen in a date at Paper, London

Posted on Thu. 10/07/2008 22:00. Categories: United Kingdom | clubs

To schmooze and booze with the best of them, Paper club on Regent Street is the place to be in the British capital.

The celebrity hangout is a particular favourite of the reality TV crowd but has attracted a string of big movie and music names to private functions in the past.

Three VIP areas include the Paper Room, the Bedroom and the Cigar Room, the latter of which is so exclusive it even boasts a secret passage back up to street level for A-listers to make a quiet escape.

At weekends, prepare to be squashed in tight on the crowded dance floor unless you can reserve a table and enjoy the big perks of private waitress service.

Another draw is the great music on offer - a hot mix of funky house, electro, RnB and recent chart hits.

In March this year, London-born pop superstar Estelle launched her new album Shine at the venue in the busiest Monday night the club had ever seen.

Meanwhile, Paper was also the club of choice for P Diddy's after-show party following the Diana tribute concert in 2007.

Club in the hub of Bulgaria

Posted on Thu. 10/07/2008 22:00. Categories: clubs

This Sofia nightspot name literally translates to 'lipstick' and clubbers will certainly need to pucker up to get past the strict "face control" door policy.

Club Chervilo is the popular hangout of the capital's elite, from film stars to pop performers and a host of models and moneyed businessmen thrown in too.

While access may be problematic for more humble clientele, once inside the extra effort pays off with a visual feast of red velvet furnishing and decadent design.

The venue incongruously forms part of the Military Club building and comprises four separate rooms known as the White Hall, Gold Room, Terrace and Tech House.

Unsurprisingly, the latter becomes a weekend dance mecca with banging house beats and throngs of eager clubbers.

For a more chilled vibe, head here on Wednesdays to take part in Latino night. Jugs of sangria and sexy salsa lessons help bring the hot Latin spirit to the heart of eastern Europe.

Warm up for a big night with pre-Chervilo drinks at either Dali or the Intermezzo and Piano Bars in the capital's swanky Kempinski Hotel.

Green light for London's first eco nightclub

Posted on Wed. 09/07/2008 22:00. Categories: United Kingdom | clubs

Tourists in the British capital will soon be able to dance the night away safe in knowledge their hedonism is helping the planet.

A 35-year-old property developer named Andrew Charalambous is the brains behind what he claims is the world's first environmentally friendly nightclub, which opens in Kings Cross this month.

The venue is called Surya and close to half of its electrical power is generated as a result of dancers crushing crystals under the floor. Wind turbines have been fixed on the roof for the same purpose.

Anyone visiting the nightclub will be obliged to commit to an eco-friendly lifestyle and the focus of almost every aspect inside the venue is conservation too.

"Everything we use has to be recycled, reclaimed and environmentally friendly," Surya's chief designer Hatty Spice told BBC Radio Four.

For other good clubs in North London, head to Egg on York Way.

Visitors to Munich who plan to see a bit of culture during their stay may want to check out the museums, such as the Deutsches Museum, the Flugwerft Schleissheim flight exhibition centre and the range of art galleries located in the Kunstareal.

Make a night of it at London's Mahiki

Posted on Thu. 08/05/2008 18:30. Categories: United Kingdom | clubs

One of London's trendiest night-spots, frequented by the likes of Princes William and Harry and Kelly Osbourne, Mahiki is situated slap-bang in the middle of fashionable Mayfair.

However, this guest-list and entry fee free venue manages to steer away from pretension.

This Polynesian paradise is a cocktail-lover's haven, with expert mixologists primed to create some fantastic alcoholic combinations.

Cocktails on the menu include the fruity Good Time Girl, which comes complete with vanilla ice cream and the Daddy-O Daquiri, with flavours catering to guests' requirements.

The underground venue regularly makes the headlines for the celebrity antics that occur within its walls and as a result it is a prime site for celeb-spotting.

Based on two floors, the upstairs is more relaxed whereas downstairs is where the party's at, with DJs playing hits until the early hours of the morning.

Henry Conway, the son of a conservative MP, recently turned up at Mahiki in a horse-drawn carriage, dressed in full Regency-era regalia.

Heaven in Prague

Posted on Thu. 01/05/2008 18:30. Categories: Czech Republic | clubs

Nebe, meaning heaven, represents paradise for a host of club-goers who head to the Czech capital to revel in the eclectic nightlife.

The Prague venue is a perfect spot for the lover of more alternative music, set in a great cellar venue.

Located in an old building dating back at least a few hundred years, the dance club and bar blares out hip-hop and techno, along with smatterings of indie, rock and punk classics.

As one of the only venues in the Czech capital to play this genre of music, it attracts massive crowds, who indulge in the cheap drinks and friendly atmosphere, while taking advantage of the free entry.

Friday nights are particularly noteworthy, when Nebe is home to the renowned Prague Heartbeats, who play a glorious selection of indie and Britpop.

Guests can treat themselves to one of over 100 cocktails, or even share one of the massive cocktail buckets designed for eight people.

Other hot night venues in Prague include Cross Club, M1 Lounge and the hip Radost FX.

Red light clubbing in Antwerp

Posted on Mon. 28/04/2008 18:30. Categories: Belgium | clubs

Anyone travelling through the Belgian city of Antwerp should make sure they visit Cafe d'Anvers if they're feeling adventurous.

A former church, this club – based in the heart of the city's red light district - has three bars, a dungeon and some of the best local and international DJs playing techno/house/electro to the eager crowds.

As a staple on the Belgian clubbing scene since the early 1990s, the venue also has male and female dancers on several of its themed nights. In previous lifetimes, the venue has also been a garage and a cinema, each having left an indelible mark on its unique interior.

More than 800 people attend the club every weekend night, and entry is free on Thursdays and Saturdays before midnight.

Antwerp is a hive of activity at night. As well as Café d'Anvers, other places worth checking out include Kulminator, a beer cafe with a selection of over 600 brews, and the Velvet Lounge, a trendy restaurant and club mixing good food with music and dancing.

Hamburg's Golden Pudel

Posted on Thu. 24/04/2008 18:30. Categories: Germany | clubs

This St Pauli club is billed as the meeting place of an eclectic collection of music lovers from the farthest reaches of the city.

From the outside, however, the Golden Pudel is far from shiny: described variously as "grotty" and "a little shack", this hostelry obviously will not appeal to those who like to play it safe.

Nevertheless it is regularly busy enough to mean it's standing room only, which is probably more comfortable than the battered wooden benches and armchairs anyway, and it has a beer garden.

Music includes a range as eclectic as its clientele - hip-hop, R'n'B, techno and rock with live DJs on various nights.

"The doorman may or may not decide to impose a nominal cover charge, the crowd is utterly heterogeneous and it's definitely the place to go if you want to feel like an insider," states concierge.com.

The club is near to the harbour and fish market and for those who want something cultural to do during the daylight hours, this area of town is steeped in fascinating history.
