Brussels is having a ball

Don't miss the closing ceremony of the 50th birthday year of one of Europe's strangest looking architectural creations.

The atom-shaped Atomium in Brussels is half a century old and its anniversary reign over the city ends in October.

Special exhibitions have been on to document the Atomium's building work in the 50s, with scale models of the Civil Engineering Arrow and the Place de Brouckere.

A series of films connected to Expo '58 have been shown at the foot of the building alongside outdoor gigs , while fifties artifacts are on display and souvenirs are available.

Atomium birthday organisers have got in the mood too by creating a temporary pavilion of happiness at the bottom of the structure out of 33,000 crates.

There have been parades and parties, film and fireworks, and there's a big ball to top the end of the anniversary year on October 18th.

Throughout the year anyone else who shares a half a century birthday with this architectural oddity gets free admission, with their identity card.

If it's not your 50th birthday, admission to the Atomium starts at €4 (£3.16).

The opening hours for the Pavilion of Happiness and Atomium are from 10:00 to 19:00 local time each day except Thursday , when it closes at 22:00.

Watch out for changes to opening times during special events and book affordable accommodation in Brussels early.
