A bite out of Birmingham

Posted on Tue. 03/06/2008 22:00. Categories: United Kingdom | European

It may never be a gastronomic capital of Europe, but Birmingham is fast developing a food reputation aside from its famous "balti mile" and city centre burger chains.

At his eponymous restaurant, chef Glynn Purnell is helping to put England's second city on the dining map with first-rate dishes on the dining table.

Having already won Birmingham its first Michelin star at acclaimed eatery Jessica's, the chef set up Purnell's to develop his flamboyant style further.

His dishes are carefully crafted to create feasts that are both visually arresting as well as taste bud treats.

The crab salad starter is an excellent example, as is his poached egg yolk with smoked haddock milk foam. For the main course, swoon over the roasted tail of fillet of beef with liquorice charcoal and Jerusalem artichoke.

For more fine dining in Birmingham look no further than across the street - Opus offers great seasonal dishes and a good wine list.
