One of Europe's largest youth parties, the Donau or Danube Island Festival is particularly popular with the young residents of Vienna, who up-sticks and head to the event each summer.Running for over 20 years, the free event attracts local bands and DJs as well as a number of well-known musicians, who perform on 16 stages spread across 19 islands.Over 2,000 participants attend the festival during the third week of June, which includes a whole host of events, including a special programme for children.Past acts at the celebration, which is one of the largest open-air festivals in Europe, have included Backstreet Boys and Simple Minds, since its opening in 1984.Various food and drink stalls are on hand across the islands, produced by local chefs.The Danube Island attracts a number of young people throughout the year due to its countless bars, restaurants and nightclubs, as well as its great beach. There are also a number of opportunities to take part in a range of sports such as rollerblading and canoeing.

The prestigious Vienna Festival offers visitors a host of entertainment opportunities, from theatre to dance and music to visual arts.Each summer, the five-week programme welcomes prominent guests and performers to keep the hoardes of visitors happy.First held in 1951, the festival this year will be taking place between May 9th and June 15th, with the Theater an der Wien as its centre for theatrical performances.As one of Vienna's most important cultural festivals, the event even has its own theme composed by Werner Pirchner. Themes covered at past celebrations have included xenophobia and issues of national identity.A highlight of the festival is the annual traditional Austrian summer ball held at the Vienna City Hall, which this year will occur on June 6th.Anyone who's anyone attends this impressive event, that sees guests dress in their most glamorous ball attire and dancing and socialising into the wee hours of the morning.Those who like even more glamour when it comes to balls should head to the Viennesse Opernball in February, which is held annually at the Vienna State Opera and has welcomed stars as diverse as Sophia Lauren and Pamela Anderson.
