A whale of a time in Norway

Posted on Thu. 22/05/2008 22:00. Categories: Activities

Late summer may be all about beaches and bathing for most holidaymakers, but it is also the best time to spot whales off the Scandinavian coast.

A Norwegian whale safari in northern Tysfjord is possibly the best way to catch a glimpse of the ocean giants close up.

Tourists have the option of joining large boat groups, an inflatable dinghy tour or even snorkeling trips among killer whales feasting on the local supply of herring.

The mammals have been visiting the area since 1987, although numbers have depleted slightly in recent years.

However, the spectacular scenery around this part of Scandinavia ensures nature-lovers should leave satisfied regardless of whale count.

To ensure the preservation of this amazing species, it is advised holidaymakers choose their tour group carefully. Many companies now offer responsible safaris heeding conservation guidelines about proximity to the animals etc.
