The fact is that the Station Amsterdam Centraal is built on three man-made islands which rest on 8,687 wooden poles pounded into the sandy, muddy earth beneath what used to be the mighty Ij River. You might say that this is one railway station that had to fight hard for its existence.
Though controversial when it was first opened in 1889 for blocking off Amsterdam’s bustling waterfront, the Station Amsterdam Centraal could not be more conveniently located. The station is right in the center of the concentric rings of canals that make up Amsterdam.
