Vienna for the children

Posted on Tue. 11/11/2008 23:00. Categories: austria | Vienna

Visitors to Vienna can live like a king or queen for the day by dressing up in regalia and exploring Schonbrunn Palace. Little ones can watch where confectioners slaved away to make Empress Sissi’s sweets, which she had personally delivered from Demel store. There’s the opportunity to have more questions answered at the young person-dedicated Zoom Museum designed for children, not forgetting fun for all the family at the Vienna Prater theme park, which sports one of Europe’s largest Ferris wheels.

Hands on at Zoom Children's Museum

Children can get a hands on experience at Zoom or Kindermuseum in Vienna. There are plenty of exhibitions and workshops designed for children aged nought to 14 years in Zoom, which is a short distance from the affordable accommodation in Vienna.

The interactive zone challenges the senses and tries to answer young people’s burning questions like: where do astronauts sleep, what does music and maths have in common, do archaeologists really dig for bones? The Zoom studio allows children to craft and create with materials while the Zoom lab lets children act out the role of film makers in a multi media laboratory. An ocean zone allows children to explore the deep, blue sea with objects and exhibits.

Dress up like royalty Schonbrunn Palace

Youngsters will love taking the time out from accommodation by Schonbrunn Palace, to pretend they own the place by dressing up as a king or queen. This is an educational children’s programme to help young people understand the differences between royal and middle class children. They can experience how young people ate, slept and played in times gone by.

To facilitate this the Palace has opened its huge expanse of gardens, which includes a maze and labyrinth, which will keep the kids entertained for hours. Children of all ages can enjoy this as well as the indoor activities. Check out the playground and climbing frames for more hours of fun.

Delicacies galore at the Demel sweet shop

Empress Sissi liked the sweets made at the Imperial and Royal Court Confectionary Bakery. In fact, she liked them so much she would have them delivered candy personally to the royal court at the Hofburg. Visitors need not be so privileged now and can see confectioners wile away hours bringing 200 year old recipes come to life at the Demel sweet shop.

Watch sweet makers handcraft classics like cat tongues, candied violets, tea scones and cakes through a glass enclosed kitchen. Children can spend hours watching the master chefs at work, pressing out dough with huge rollers and icing cakes while adults can take the time to enjoy a cake and coffee, before heading back to the affordable accommodation in Vienna.

Fun at Vienna Prater fair

Children and adults of all ages can find their favourite from 250 attractions at Vienna Prater, including a giant Ferris wheel known as Riesengrad. There are ghost trains, merry-go-rounds, arcades and go-karts to choose from accompanied by plenty of snack bars. The park has been going as early as 1403 and once glimpse with the children and you will see why.

Kids super keen on looking round the whole site, may lead you to want to check into one of the hotels by Vienna Prater. It has come a long way since it was a meeting ground for innkeeper, coffee brewer and gingerbread bakers’ entertainment. Emperor Joseph II donated this area to the Viennese as a public leisure centre in 1766 and it has gone from strength to strength.

Polar bear cubs at Schonbrunn Zoo

Lastly, do not miss the chance to see polar bear cubs a short distance from the hotels by Schonbrunn Zoo. From March the big white furry mum has pushed her youngsters into the limelight as they were able to leave her indoor facility. They celebrate their birthday on November 30th when there will be much pomp and celebration. If you had a date in mind to visit this zoo, then here it is. Don’t forget to check when feeding time is.

Vienna pops corks for saint

Posted on Sun. 31/08/2008 22:00. Categories: austria | Vienna

Corks will fly on St Martin's Day in Vienna as Austrians celebrate his legacy with the start of the wine season.

The soldier cum monk became famous for tearing his cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm.

Although St Martin's Day is most celebrated in Germanic countries, it is also recognised in the UK as Martinmas.

Here beef cattle are slaughtered to mark the supposed sunny spell that is meant to come around this time.

It is more traditional in Austria to celebrate the saint's day with paper lanterns and song, which is swapped for treats around the town.

Farmers used to be taxed on this day and had to give away some of the harvest, so it is now customary to eat goose with blaukraut and serviettenknodel.

The wine of the year is formally introduced to heruigens (bars) around this time, which also merits a bit of singing.

Vienna usually produces more white than red and not a lot is exported so there's plenty to drink.

Gruner Veltliner is a favourite in the capital, but for those who can't wait partially fermented Sturm is available around town from September.

Try one of Vienna's many markets, notably Naschmarkt, where many vendors will offer samples.

Everywhere in the city and country will be celebrating, so there will be plenty to do no matter which cheap hotel in Vienna you book.

Vienna sings Schubert's praises

Posted on Sun. 31/08/2008 22:00. Categories: austria | Vienna

Choirs from all over the world descend on Vienna for one of the world's greatest musical events.

Since the musica mundi series of concerts began 20 years ago, more than 220,000 people have taken part.

They have sung in 5,000 choirs at 89 events all over the world.

More than half of participants have been young people under the age of 25.

Vienna's event is called the International Franz-Schubert Choir Competition and Festival.

It runs at various venues crammed with heritage around the city, including the Konzerthaus, which is used to big names, and the neo-Gothic City Hall.

Additional events have been planned for the Lichtental parish church where Schubert was baptized then later played.

To see the masters of music perform, book into affordable accommodation in Vienna to watch the whole programme.

The Interkultur Foundation has organised the event, which will run from November 12th to 16th this year.

Next year's dates are November 11th to 15th.

Schubert wrote about 600 songs, nine symphonies, including the famous Unfinished Symphony, and opera during his life.

He composed chamber and piano music, and was a good friend of poet Goethe, who was among those who urged him on in his career.

Sadly, Schubert is believed to have contracted syphilis and died at the age of 31.

Vinotherapy in Vienna

Posted on Thu. 07/08/2008 22:00. Categories: austria | Vienna

Travel News brought to you by Eurobookings, the experts in cheap hotel bookings for all major European cities including Vienna.

Vinotherapy is not about drinking until you drop, it is about luxuriating in the whole vino experience – in other words practically bathing in it.

Guests of the Loisium Hotel's vino-spa near Vienna can enjoy pioneering grape-therapy among a whole range of treatments in glassy surroundings designed by the US's Steven Holl.

Body and mind aren't simply soothed by drinking the finest wine from the surrounding Kamptal Valley, argues the Loisium, you need plenty of grape and grape-seed oil applied too.

That's what the therapists do for spa guests, alongside Nordic walking, running, cycling and golf.

After a spot of pampering there's also an amazing local wine-list, should you choose to eat there.

Touring 900-year-old cellars beneath the spa is highly recommended before deciding what to drink with food.

The spa hotel is U-shaped and surrounds a courtyard, which opens up into the vineyards and beautiful centre of Langen.

Walk like an Egyptian to Vienna

Posted on Wed. 23/07/2008 22:00. Categories: austria | Vienna

Travel News brought to you by Eurobookings, the experts in cheap hotel bookings for all major European cities including Vienna.

Vienna is certainly overflowing with culture and history due to its connections with classical music and beautiful architecture, but holidaymakers may not be expecting to learn about the ancient Egyptians when visiting this Austrian city.

However, Vienna's Museum of Ethnology is running a Tutankhamun and the World of the Pharaohs exhibition until September 28th.

Offering visitors a chance to glimpse the exciting and exotic life of the Egyptians, it is the first time such artifacts have been shown in Austria since Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered in 1922.

Around 150 objects will be on display in the museum, many of which have never been seen outside of Egypt - although the infamous death mask will not be part of the exhibition as it is not allowed to leave the north African country.

The MuseumsQuartier Wien is another cultural venue in Vienna that holidaymakers may be keen to experience.
