Ten days well spent in Ghent

Posted on Thu. 22/05/2008 22:00. Categories: Belgium | Events

Mix with millions this July in Belgium's medieval city of Ghent for one of Europe's biggest and oldest festivals.

In fact, the event comprises four international festivals - jazz, street theatre, puppets and dance.

On top of all that, there is a fabulous parade, music, fireworks, comedy, exhibitions, boat trips on the river Lys and plenty of the fine food and beer Belgium has become famous for.

The festivities date back to the 19th century when the city's bourgeoisie used horse races, jousts and hot air balloon displays to lure prosperous merchants their way.

The Ghent event, which kicks off on July 19th, has changed radically in format since those days but still continues to pull in the people.

As well as these festivities, the historic Flanders city is renowned for its cathedral, castle and stunning old harbour. Several other important buildings in the city have been recognised by Unesco as World Heritage Sites.
