Not only was this truly grand accommodation built in 1883 to compliment the 1879 Central Station to which it is attached – but on May 24, 1927, television’s inventor John Logie Baird transmitted the world’s first long-distance TV pictures from this very hotel! Staying in this unique residence, you will be joining the ranks of VIPs that include Frank Sinatra, Laurel & Hardy, Sir Winston Churchill and JFK. When Roy Rogers stayed here, it was reported that his horse Trigger got the larger suite! Designed by renowned Scottish architect Robert Rowland Anderson, this Queen Anne style building is gorgeous, and you’ll thrill to the intricate gables, multi-paned windows and all the other 19th century hotel features. Re-opened in September 2010 after a £20-million refurbishment, the hotel now boasts many modern amenities, like plasma TVs and complimentary wireless Internet. It also boasts the elegant Tempus Bar and Restaurant, where you can enjoy traditional local cuisine made from seasonal locally sourced ingredients. Central location could not be better. Although situated in the station, train noise was never an issue. Concierge extremely helpful with advice re directions etc.. History of hotel and how it has been refurbished is of particular interest. Although hotel not sign posted a newspaper vendor in station gave us perfect instructions. "Up escalator, walk to big clock and then turn left".

The hotel refurbishment is really great, we loved the champange bar with the marble floor & bedroom was really well thought out with Wine n Strawberrys also ie hairdryer Iron n Iron board usually at hotels you have to go collect iron & pay deposit from reception & all the staff were very attentive to us.
