Let’s start with the Churches. Dresden is widely known for its destruction in World War II, and there are many important buildings and that were destroyed. Including the magnificent Frauenkirche. And consider a hotel near the Church or a hotel near the equally magnificent Semperoper Opera House, which witnessed the premieres of many Wagner and Strauss Operas. And halfway between the two, you will marvel at the awesome block-long Fürstenzug, a rendition of centuries of Saxon Kings on horseback, which holds the honor of being the largest porcelain painting in the world. All these sights can be found in the city’s central Altstadt District. And you won’t want to miss Dresden Castle or the Blaues Wunder Bridge in the Blasewitz District. There are also Dresden hotels right near the city’s bunker-like Neue Synagoge, which stands across the street from a plaque marking the site of the Alte Synagoge, which was destroyed during Kristalnacht.
Whichever hotel you choose, you may start noticing the strong presence in Dresden of August der Starke (August the Strong). The Saxon king had palaces built all over Saxony, and one of the greatest is the Zwinger, located right across the square from the Opera House. Here you’ll find the Museum of Military History, the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) and a stunning courtyard. Many hotels in Dresden are located in the vicinity of the Zwinger, and many hotel rooms enjoy views of it.
