Cologne City Hotel Reservations
Cologne is an old city, dating back to Roman times. But its also a very modern and hip place. Most of the old buildings were destroyed in WWII.
The first place you should see is the Kölner Dom. This incredible structure, Germany's largest cathedral, remains fully intact and was not destroyed in the wars. Building began in 1248 and through many starts and stops, was finally finished in 1880. It has a number of treasures including the Shrine of the Three Magi, which apparently are the remains of the three kings who "followed the star to Bethlehem." The Cathedral Treasury is also a good place to go. It has a number of ecclesiastical treasures including robes, sculptures and reliquaries. The 13th century building is quite beautiful.
If you like modern art, go see the Museum Ludwig in the Alstadt part of town. Works by Picasso are here as well as avant-garde Russian art. Some German expressionism works are also located at the Ludwig. Arrive in the city by train. Frankfurt is just under an hour and a half away and Berlin is only four hours.
