Die Port van Cleve

The rich history of the hotel started on its location when G.A. Heineken opened his first Heineken brewery between 1864 and 1870. Due to the city council filling in the canal in front of the building in the name of modernisation, he moved to the present location on the Stadhouderskade.

The Hulscher brothers continued the business and on 5 September 1870 a unique beer house, called Die Port van Cleve, opened its doors. It did not take long for it to evolve from a beer house into restaurant with the De Poort brasserie serving typical Dutch dishes and what were to become the famous numbered steaks. Since 1870 these steaks have been served and in 1997 the magic number of 6,000,000 numbered and certificated steaks was reached.

Evolving from a beer house to a Dutch steakhouse, it was not long until the first rooms made the building the Die Port van Cleve hotel. The name Die Port van Cleve comes from a memorial stone with the inscription ‘Die Port van Cleve’ which was found during the takeover by the Hulscher brothers. Some unchanged features include the unique frontage, which has listed building status, and also the unique interior of De Blauwe Parade bar-bodega. The Delft blue tiles in the Bodega date back to 1887.

In De Poort brasserie (seats up to 130 people) you can enjoy a combination of traditional Dutch and international cuisine. For all of the dishes served, the restaurant uses as much produce from Amsterdam as possible. The unique ‘no-nonsense’ style of the executive chef creates a pure culinary adventure.

Get the real Dutch feeling in De Blauwe Parade bar, surrounded by genuine Delft blue and white tiles. Here you can enjoy a drink, a jenever (the traditional Dutch gin-like drink) and Dutch liquor tasting. The bar is also a great place for an informal diner.

In the peaceful and modern De Hooiberg corner bar you can watch people pass by. Here staff will gladly welcome you for a coffee, appetizer or a digestive.

The hotel is situated in a beautiful location, in the heart of the city, where you can really enjoy the real Dutch atmosphere. It is within walking distance of many shops, museums, theatres, places of interest, night spots and the many canals and the canal houses that Amsterdam is famous for.

Just in front of this 4-star hotel you will see the Royal Palace and Dam Square and it is next to the Magna Plaza shopping centre. There's much to explore in this area and the many streets leading away from the Dam can take you to every part of the city. You can shop until you drop on the Rokin or at the Kalverstraat, but a more hip area is the Damstraat with loads of coffee shops and hippie stores.

The hotel is only a 15 minute walk to the famous Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein where there is entertainment 24 hours a day. The area behind the shopping centre, the Bijenkorf, leads into the red light district. While a wander around the Nieuwe Kerk along curving alleyways will lead you to some pleasant restaurants, bars and more coffee shops.

By Car:
- On the A10 (Amsterdam ring road), take the exit marked Centrum.
- Follow the signs for Amsterdam Central Station.
- Turn right opposite of the Central Station (at Holland International).
- This street is called Martelaarsgracht, as it changes into Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal keep driving onwards.
- You will find the hotel on your right hand side next to the Magna Plaza shopping centre and behind the Royal Palace.

By Shuttle Bus:
- The Connexion shuttle bus takes you from Schiphol Airport directly to the hotel.
- It leaves from the airport from 07:00 every 20 minutes, from 17:00 every 30 minutes and from 19:00 every 60 minutes until 21:00.

By Train:
- The train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station takes about 20 minutes.
- From the Central Station it is just a five minute walk to the hotel.
- Bus number 121 and tram numbers 1, 2 and 5 from Amsterdam Central Station stop in front of the hotel.
